Seat belt pillow

Summer time means lots of fun, outdoor activities and travel. To make the nap time comfortable during long drives seat belt pillows are must have. My kid being a Thomas fan I made it Thomas themed( just sacrificed his outgrown t-shirt). Very simple way to comfort. Now I have demand in line for an Owl one.

To make one you need
2 fabric pieces of 27"*8" ( i used one Thomas T-shirt and one black T-shirt)
66" of coordinating ribbon around 3/8" thick
                    1 bag poly-fill

cut the ribbon into six equal pieces and arrange 3 pieces 8" apart on each side of the long fabric.

Stitch the 2 pieces together keeping right side facing inside. leave a small opening for filling it with Poly-fill.
Hand sew the opening and you are ready with a designer pillow.

Enjoy the Summer ride with happy well rested kids.

Handmade Rakhi

Rakhi festival is around the corner. Rakhi, a celebration of Brother sister bonding falls on the Full moon day of sharawan month. In olden times a simple sacred red thread was tied by sisters around brother's wrist and brother use to take oath to protect sister from all odd times.
As the time changes we see lot of fancy rakhis in the market targeting the kids favorite like Mickey mouse ,Doremon etc. Now more ecofriendly like teracotta rakhi or fresh flowers rakhi are also available.
Edible rakhi are also picking up the trend as there will be hardly any kid who won't like a chocolate rakhi.
I experimented with back to school theme rakhi and here is my collection

Hope you enjoyed this new theme. Please Leave comments and suggestion.

Unique Old CD craft

The way technology is going CD's will be soon be part of the history and will be tough to find like floppies. At that time making anything out of CD will be an expensive craft but till then lets enjoy making some unique things to use the material available in abundance.

Animal sculpture: These animal sculptures are so unique that anybody would love to have one

Christmas Tree : This is my next Christmas DIY, off course on a small scale

Purse from CD: I would add nice decorative cloth inside and outside to make it a nice coin purse

You can also make basket from old CDs, does not mater if you don't know how to crochet you can always find other ways to decorate.

CD holder from old CD: How nice it is to hold the CD in a holder made of old CD

CD clock : A small CD, some marbles and lot of creativity ends up in a clock like this.

Pendant: This is made of polymer clay and old CD mosaic

 Wings: wings of creativity

CD snowman: Made with old CD and some texture paste

Ganesha: Kids can use old CD's too. above all ideas involve cutting heating etc which are not kids friendly but below I just painted the CD and used the papermache clay to make the Ganesha form

In this one I painted the CD with acrylic colors and scratched off with a screwdriver to make designs.

I hope you enjoyed these unique ideas to use some of those CDs.

Book Folding

Reading a book is like a treasure hunt, if you follow the  right trail of clues then you find a chest full of knowledge and if you are not paying attention then you are just lost somewhere. Some books you want to preserve forever but some books you just want to pass on. Today I want to show the way to convert the pass on books as cherished treasure. Book folding not only create a masterpiece but a very good stress buster too. Also it enhance the motor skill and hand eye coordination in kids

Bird house

Kids will love to make this and you can be more creative with it and add clay birds too. This is done by simple folds and if you are new to book folding you can find the tutorial over here http://redhenhome.blogspot.com/2011/07/book-birdhouses.html

I used a hard cover book to make this bird house and left with book cover with spine. Don't through away the spine as next project will make you bring all old books into life.

Book cover purse

These are just beginner ideas. You can make anything by folding pages of a book. Only thing you need is patience.

Play with Clay

As the title of the post suggests I played around with different type of clay and the base materials to create the following

Salt dough is used on the Styrofoam piece to create this small table. Piece was left overnight to dry completely. Then I painted it black and did the golden dry brush once the black paint was dry

Another view. Perfect for my Ganesha idol.

I used bread clay on plaster of paris flower shape base( home made) for this one. It can be used as candle holder or just like that

Store bought air dry clay was used on the recycled cardboard boxes to make the following 2 pieces.  Embellished it further with gems and 3D fabric paints.

Sometimes you just need a slight idea to spark creative fire. I hope i was successful in that with my clay ideas.
Please leave your valuable suggestions in comments.
